Course Details
This vocational one-year course is aimed at students who wish to pursue a career in British newspaper journalism.
The Masters degree builds on the success of the postgraduate diploma course, which has an enviable reputation for the quality of its students and their success in obtaining employment in the industry.
You will be taught by staff who are all journalists with backgrounds in national and regional newspapers and other media.
The journalism elements are taught in a practical manner, with an emphasis on learning by doing. Students work in a newsroom atmosphere.
The course which is accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) offers students the chance to take the council’s own set of five external examinations which include law, public administration and shorthand.
We have forged close links with a number of leading news organisations. This has helped ensure that our students meet the needs of a rapidly changing industry.
During the Easter period, all students undertake two work placements, each lasting a fortnight. These placements serve a dual purpose. They give students an opportunity to put theory into practice and demonstrate their skills to future employers.
Students have gained work experience on national and regional titles as well as the Press Association the UK’s national news agency.
Virtually every student on the postgraduate course has secured a job in national, regional and local newspapers or news agencies or, gone on to further training.
