Course Content
The course provides both practical training for students who want to work as broadcast journalists and an invigorating and rigorous learning experience.
Both the curriculum and the way it is delivered encourage students to develop personal skills and awareness as well as their technical and editorial abilities as broadcast journalists.
The emphasis is on learning by doing. Lectures are followed by seminars, exercises, workshops and newsdays, where students work in teams to gather local news for bulletins and programmes.
There are three main parts of the curriculum:
Radio and Television Journalism - Students learn about news sources, newsgathering and reporting, newsroom and studio operation, news bulletins, packages and programmes, recording and editing, interviewing, writing and story construction, ideas and treatments, roles and responsibilities, ethics and regulation.
Law - The focus is on the law that affects the working journalist, most notably contempt and defamation. Students also study the courts and restrictions on reporting, breach of confidence and official secrets.
Public Administration - Subjects covered include local government and its changing role, central government and its departments, political parties and their structures and the European Union.
