Undergraduate Journalism Courses

For 40 years the Department of Journalism has been teaching tomorrow's journalists. The forerunners of today's newspaper and broadcast careers were among teh early courses to be established.

The emphasis is on learning by doing offering industry standard facilities and an exciting and enjoyable environment in which to learn.

This exciting and challenging new programme addresses the practice and study of journalism from a wide variety of international perspectives. It is aimed at students who wish to gain practical journalism skills that will enable them to work as journalists. You will study and analyse journalism in international and national settings and learn about the social and cultural contexts of journalism.

An ability to write or talk knowledgeably about sport so that other people want to read about it and listen to it is greatly in demand by publishers and broadcasters of all kinds. The usual career route to the sports pages is through a general education in journalism, and for many this will remain a pre-requisite. Our new course in sports journalism is aimed at those who want to study the two subjects of sport and journalism in depth with a view to a specialist position in the media or communications industries.

The BA (Hons) Journalism course is a full-time, three year undergraduate programme - one of the first of its kind to be established in the UK when it was launched ten years ago. Hundreds of its graduates are now working in journalism and other media related jobs.

The foundation entry course is a unique course run by the University in conjunction with the BBC. We are looking for applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds taking a less traditional path into higher education and journalism.

BA (Hons) Digital Journalism Production

The BA(Hons) Digital Journalism Production programme is aimed at a generation of storytellers who'll use the latest technology to produce new types of stories viewed on mobile phones, PDA's, interactive TV's and online. A generation less 'hung up' about what makes news and totally committed to digital technology and mixing media to create emotionally engaging experiences for the viewer - whether they're telling stories about pop music or reporting on the local football derby. This is a hands-on course with the focus on journalism design and production for the digital age.

Combined Honours Journalism

The Department offers Journalism as a subject within the University's Combined Honours system. Students normally take three subjects in their first year and specialise in two of them in years 2 and 3. This combination provides a broader field of study than the BA(Hons)Journalism course. However students still learn the core journalism skills.
