Course Content
The course is designed to be practical from the first day. You start by learning production skills for online delivery creating content for a weekly site. Along side that you will learn the newsgathering skills and be introduced to the digital production concepts that underpin the editorial focus of the course.
In the second year we introduce more complex production skills. We look at audio and video in more depth as well as the new delivery platforms you may encounter.
The editorial focus is developed with feature writing and more detailed examination of what makes the editorial process in a digital environment different and what core journalistic values still hold true. You will also complete a placement in industry to apply what you have learnt in a real environment.
In the final year you will take a critical look at the legal, regulatory and ethical issues that affect Digital Journalism as well as a module in Journalism Law.
You will join other students in the department working on projects producing content for real clients as part of our award winning consultancy project UKProgress.
You will also get the chance to produce your own project work, research and reflect on an element of industry practice through a dissertation.
Learning and assessment
You will spend time learning and working in a stimulating newsroom atmosphere. Throughout the course, you will learn the basic skills you require in a carefully structured programme of lectures and exercises.
The strong practical focus of the course will mean that most of your assessment will be project based but we will demand a high level of critical evaluation of your work.
For the dissertation, you will need to source, study and analyse a range of literature and findings in your area of interest before undertaking your final research.
