Course Details
This exciting course is aimed at students who wish to gain practical journalism skills that will enable them to work as journalists, learn about the social and cultural contexts of journalism and study and analyse journalism in international and national settings.
Student learning is centered on practical reporting and writing assignments that develop core journalism skills of news selection, news gathering and news presentation. These skills are related to the international arena by examining their underpinning principles and considering these in relation to a range of international news media.
This practical work leads to reflections, and then formal analysis, of political, economic, social and cultural influences on news and journalism in international contexts and in different national settings.
Students from non-English speaking countries will undertake extra language learning each year to ensure they leave the course with a high standard of English.
Delivery of the course will draw on the expertise of the department’s staff, who have many years of experience as working journalists in the UK and international arenas and as journalism lecturers and researchers. Additionally, there will be lectures and ‘masterclasses’ with international practitioners and others.
