What to bring

Moving away from home for the first time can be a daunting experience for anyone, but as long as you plan everything beforehand, moving to a new place needn't be such a trauma. If you're unsure of what to bring when you move to Preston, just follow our checklist.

Please note that your belongings will not be insured in the University accommodation and the Accommodation Services strongly recommend that you have adequate insurance for your belongings.

The UK has a very changeable climate and so it's advisable to bring a variety of clothing! In Preston it can be windy and you need to be prepared for wet weather all year round. From October to February, the temperature can fall below freezing, particularly during the night, so warm clothing is essential. In summer the temperature is rarely above 70°F / 20°C.

You will need to bring the following items:

  • Bedding, including pillows
  • Clothes hangers
  • Crockery and cutlery
  • Pots, pans and basic utensils such as bottle and can openers
  • Other small electrical items - kettles, toasters, sandwich toaster, iron etc (220-240 volts)
  • Bedside/desk lamp

Remember, storage space is limited so be selective when packing. Think about what you really need before you pack. The main university halls of residence are approximately ten minutes walk from the main shopping centre of Preston, where you will find lots of department stores and food shops. Preston also has an indoor market (Mon - Sat) and an outdoor market on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, where you can buy fresh meat, fish, fruit and vegetables, as well as CD's, clothes etc.

The following items are not permitted:

  • Fires and heaters of any description
  • Chip pans and deep fat fryers
  • Candles
