Cluster flats
Ribble - Eden -Derwent - Douglas - Whitendale
Completed in 1992, the University's cluster flats comprise approximately 850 rooms split into five halls. Situated close to the Department of Journalism, the cluster flats are modern, spacious and very popular with international students.
Ribble, Eden, Derwent, and Douglas halls are located next to the laundry block on the north of the campus and Whitendale hall, surrounding a planted courtyard, is just a short walk away from the library.
Single study bedrooms are grouped into flats of four, five and six people sharing a communal kitchen and bathroom. Some bedrooms are designated as smoking areas, but Whitendale hall is a non-smoking hall.
Facilities
Study bedrooms
The study bedrooms are all singles and each contains a bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers, desk, chair, bookshelf, vanity unit, mirror, wash basin and telephone. All rooms are carpeted.
Kitchens and lounges
The kitchens are shared by everyone in the flat and contain the following: electric cooker, microwave, refrigerator, freezer and storage cupboards. Food preparation and seating areas are also provided.
Bathrooms
Each flat shares one shower, bath and toilet.
Other
The cluster flats are all centrally heated and charges for gas and electricity are included in your rent. Heating and hot water systems operate in the mornings and evenings but not 24 hours a day. A university launderette is situated directly next to the halls. Vacuum cleaners and other cleaning equipment are provided for students' use.
Cleaning & maintenance
Stairwells and lobbies are cleaned Monday to Friday but students are responsible for the day-to-day cleaning of their own flats. All maintenance issues are handled directly by the Student Accommodation Service in Marsh Building.
Staffing
The cluster flat residences have three live-in staff to attend to urgent problems and emergencies outside office hours. The residences are also patrolled by the university's security personnel each night. Routine matters during office hours are handled by one of the residence officers who are additionally available at other times via an on-call rota. Elected committees of residents meet staff regularly to discuss problems and organise social events.
