Houses

In addition to the 1500 bed spaces on campus, the University owns or leases approximately 50 terrace houses within 2km radius of the main site. The houses are predominantly Victorian and scattered throughout Preston.

Facilities

Study bedrooms
The study bedrooms each contain a bed or beds, wardrobe, chest of drawers, desk, chair and bookshelf. All rooms are carpeted.

Kitchens and lounges

The kitchens are shared by the students occupying the house and contain the following: gas or electric cooker, refrigerator, freezer and storage cupboards. Food preparation and seating areas are also provided.

Bathrooms
Each house has a shower or bath, plus one toilet.

Other

All the houses have central heating and charges for gas and electricity are included in your rent. The University makes arrangements for council tax and water charges. Phone lines are provided but residents wishing to take advantage of this facility must arrange connection. Unlike in the halls, a separate lounge with seating is available in each house. All properties are fitted with a burglar alarm, rear external security light and smoke detectors.

Cleaning & maintenance

The houses are cleaned prior to the start of the academic year in September, but residents must keep the houses clean throughout the year with vacuum cleaners and other cleaning equipment that are provided. All maintenance issues are handled directly by the Student Accommodation Service in Marsh Building.

Staffing
Routine matters during office hours are handled by one of the residence officers who are available in an emergency at other times via an on-call rota. Security staff are also on standby outside office hours for urgent problems.
