Accommodation

How to apply for accommodation | On-campus | Off-campus

Situated near the city centre, close to all amenities, UCLan's halls of residence are close to the teaching buildings and most houses and flats are within 3km of the campus. We help students to find accommodation either in the on-campus halls and flats, or off-campus residences close to the University.

Preston brings together students from different backgrounds and circumstances often forging lifelong friendships, and UCLan is one of the few university accommodation services to have attained the Hospitality Assured Standard award for customer service.

Accommodation Services also achieved 98% satisfaction rates in UCLan's 2002 student survey and this is because all of the students living in university-owned accommodation are given:

  • a warm welcome
  • clean and comfortable accommodation
  • a fast, responsive and helpful service

How to apply for accommodation

When you are made an offer of an academic place at UCLan, the Admissions Office will provide you with information on how to apply for your accommodation. International students are encouraged to arrive at the university four weeks before the UK students (or one week in the case of European students), to attend a programme specifically designed to help you settle into life in the UK. Accommodation for this period will be arranged on your behalf, if the University is notified of your attendance on the programme. Instructions on how to do this will be sent with your offer letter. For more information on how to apply for accommodation, telephone Accommodation Services on 0044 1772 892529 or email saccommodation@uclan.ac.uk.

On-campus

There are currently 1500 places in UCLan's on-campus residences, such as:

All are self-catering, single study bedrooms with a wash basin, bed, wardrobe and desk, and rent includes all gas, electricity and water charges (see prices). They are just a short walk from the main university buildings, food outlets and the laundry facilities.

The kitchens in each residence are suitable for preparing light meals and snacks, and most of the ingredients you will need are available locally, such as fresh meat, vegetables and fruit, rice, pasta and spices. Close to campus there are also a large number of commercially owned outlets serving food, such as takeaways, pubs, cafes, bars and restaurants.

Each residence has a university appointed warden, and residence officers operate a 24 hour on-call system and may be contacted by students free of charge by and internal telephone system. Students can also make international calls from the telephones in their room for a set charge.

Off-campus

In addition to the 1500 bed spaces on campus, the University owns off-campus accommodation within a 3km radius. These are:

Burrowbank and Firbank Residences are divided single study bedrooms with a wash basin, bed, wardrobe and desk, and communal kitchen and a lounge areas, just ten minutes walk from the UCLan campus. They are a popular choice for those preferring a quiet environment and a more independent lifestyle.

The University owns, or leases around 50 terrace houses, which are mostly two storey Victorian houses, with between two and five single study bedrooms and a shared bathroom, kitchen and living area. They have central heating and a separate lounge, kitchen and bath/shower room.

Gas, Electricity and water is included in the rent (see prices) for the off-campus residences and the terrace houses.

Private houses

For late applicants and students who fail to secure a place in university owned accommodation, Accommodation Services also has a scheme for registering private landlords who offer accommodation to students. There are over 500 properties registered with the university mostly shared houses accommodating from three to six people.

There are buildings for between 20 to 100 people, bed-sits and purpose built halls of residence for up to 425 students. There are also a few properties suitable for couples or two people sharing.
