Off-Campus residences

In addition to the 1500 bed spaces on campus, the University owns two small residences within a 3km radius of the main site. Burrowbank and Firbank Residences are large Victorian houses located just 10 minutes walk from the University.

Burrowbank houses 21 students, and Firbank houses 10 students in single and twin rooms. Both residences are situated close to local shops and amenities and are a popular choice for those preferring a quiet environment and a more independent lifestyle.

Facilities

Study bedrooms
The study bedrooms each contain a bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers, desk, chair and bookshelf. All rooms are carpeted.

Kitchens and lounges
The kitchens are shared by the students and contain gas or electric cookers, microwaves, refrigerators, freezers, food preparation areas and storage cupboards. Seating is provided in the lounges.

Bathrooms
Each residence has a number of baths, showers and toilets which are shared by the residents.

Other
Both residences have gas central heating, gas fires, and electrical heaters. Bills for electricity and gas are included in the rent. Each is equipped with a payphone, washing machine and drier. Firbank Residence is available for women only.

Staffing
Routine matters during office hours are handled by one of the residence officers who are available in an emergency at other times via an on-call rota. Security staff are also on standby outside office hours for urgent problems.

Cleaning & maintenance
Stairwells, lobbies and kitchens are cleaned approximately once per week but students are responsible for the day-to-day cleaning of these, areas and for their own study bedrooms. Vacuum cleaners and other cleaning equipment are provided for students' use. All maintenance issues are handled directly by the Student Accommodation Service in Marsh Building.
