Whether you want to relax over a pint of English beer, grab a coffee with friends, sample some of the best Thai food in the region, or dance the night away, Preston is packed with restaurants, pubs, bars and clubs to suit all tastes.
Restaurants
If its food you're after, Preston has a huge selection of cosmopolitan restaurants. You can choose from Italian, Chinese and Thai to French bistros, American or Mexican food and a wide range of Asian cuisine. And of course there are traditional English fish and chip shops. Many offer very reasonable menus and some will have special discount rates for students, so you can afford to eat well.
Many of the city's pubs offer bar meals at lunchtime and in the evening, and there are also a host of burger-bars and take-away outlets in Preston, serving Italian, Chinese and Indian dishes, reflecting the multicultural population of the city.
Paul Heathcote, one of the UK's celebrity chefs, has his restaurant Simply Heathcotes, in the attractive Winckley Square area of the city.
Pubs
Pubs are in abundance and whatever your liking, you'll find it in Preston. There are real ale houses for the beer enthusiast, traditional pubs with open log fires, trendy cocktail bars, and high-tech sports pubs with huge television screens and lots of loud music. New and fashionable cafe bars continue to open near the city's newly refurbished St George's Shopping Centre.
Near to the university campus there are a number of very popular student pubs, serving food and drinks at low prices. UCLan's own Students' Union is right in the centre of the university campus and has three lively bars that are popular with students looking for a cheap bite to eat and a pint of lager.
Nightlife
Preston has masses to offer for a good night out. The city centre is fairly compact so everything is close together and for students living on or near the campus it's all within easy walking distance. If you enjoy live music there are several places which offer something every night and you'll find bar prices a very pleasant surprise in comparison with the rest of the UK.
Not only has the city centre got more bars than you could stagger into in a month of Saturdays, it has also got the clubs to beat the coolest big cities in the land. Nightclubs are plentiful, and are varied enough to to suit all musical tastes. Dance music, student nights, indie, 60s, 70s 80s and 90s music are all available. Most of the clubs which attract students don't have a strict dress code, especially during the week, so you can go along in your jeans and t-shirt.
In addition to the bars in the centre of Preston, UCLan's Students' Union is is a sophisticated club by night. Open every night of the week, its three bars host various live entertainment, including quiz nights, a comedy club, and on Saturday nights it transforms into a super-club and is visited by the UK's top DJ's.
