Enjoy yourself

Eating, drinking and socialising | Entertainment | Clubs and societies | Sports facilities

If you fancy a break from your studies, there are lots of ways to enjoy yourself on the university campus. There are numerous restaurants and coffee shops and the Students' Union building has three bars with regular live entertainment.

There are over sixty clubs and societies including an international society and you can also try your hand at a number of sports at the on-campus sports centre or Preston's magnificent £12million sports arena.

Eating, drinking and socialising

The University has two restaurants and several coffee bars. The Students’ Union provides food, drink and entertainment through its three cafes and bars. There are also many privately run bars and cafes around the campus where you can grab a coffee or a bite to eat between lectures or arrange to meet your friends in the evening.

Entertainment

Entertainment in the Students’ Union includes pool tables and games machines, live bands and stage shows, dance nights, quizzes, and live coverage of national and international football. The University Arts Centre regularly hosts performances from touring theatre companies and musicians, and is also a venue for art exhibitions.

It is the home of the university’s thriving drama society where you can unleash your talents either as an actor, producer, stagehand or costume designer. As well as performances on campus the group performs annually at the internationally famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The Arts Centre is also available for students to use free of charge, as a venue for parties and functions.

Clubs and societies

Drama club and film club are just two of over sixty societies and clubs which will help you to make friends from the UK and around the world, perhaps continuing an existing interest, or trying something completely new.

The international society offers all students the chance to meet others and experience different cultures and nationalities. It organises day trips to UK destinations and weekend trips to Europe at very reasonable prices. Recent visits have included Manchester, London, the Lake District, Amsterdam and Paris.

The indoor sports centre in the heart of the UCLan campus has an activities hall, a fully equipped fitness room and dance studio, and students can also use Preston's new £12million Sports Arena, just 1.5km away from the University.

Opened in April 2000, the arena has facilities for athletics (eight lane track), rugby league, rugby union, football (five grass pitches), hockey (two all weather pitches), netball, tennis (four courts) and cycling (1.5 km circuit). The arena also has seven training grids, an indoor room for activities, theory sessions and fitness training. A new 18-station fitness suite opened in May 2001.

Students can purchase an annual sports permit to use the facilities or pay a casual fee.
