With around 30,000 students studying at Preston, UCLan is now the sixth largest university in the UK, and the Journalism Department is rated 'excellent' by the UK government's Higher Education Quality Assurance Agency. .

During the last ten years the University has invested over £77million in providing a modern, state of the art learning environment, with free internet access via an extensive computer network, and a new library providing access to national and international resources through online databases.

The Department of Journalism was visited in 1997 and scored 22 points out of a possible 24; one of the best two or three results in the country. Assessors looked at the curriculum, teaching quality, student progression, student support, resources and quality assurance in their conclusions the QAA said:

"The Department of Journalism offers an attractive spectrum of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The curricula are consistently informed by the professional experience of the staff and their strong links with industry and allow students to fulfil a range of vocational aims and acquire appropriate transferable skills. The majority of students proceed rapidly to appropriate employment."


Latest technology

Your lectures and classes will mainly take place in and around the Department of Journalism, based in a building fully equipped with classrooms, lecture theatres and computer rooms all kitted out with the latest technology. Several lecture theatres have facilities for TV, video and computer presentations, and national and international video-conferencing is also possible from TVI theatres.

The Department has an extensive range of digital facilities, including:

  • TV studio and adjacent gallery
  • five radio studios
  • two broadcast production areas
  • two video edit suites
  • three print newsrooms
  • online production suite

The University Library

The University Library is a modern four-storey building, well stocked with journalism books, journals, reference texts and online resources. Major international newspapers are also available.

The library is open seven days a week (24 hours a day during peak periods) and houses the largest computer access area in the University, with around 240 networked terminals.
Students have their own:

  • free internet access
  • email address
  • personal work area on the university’s computer network.

The library also has quiet areas and bookable meeting rooms, ideal for group seminars, equipped with overhead projectors, whiteboards and flipcharts. The specialised learning resources unit also offers a computerised Braille translation service which supports the Mission to remove barriers to those with special needs.
