Student support

Advisory and Counselling Service | International student support | Pre-sessional English language course | Language support | Orientation programme | Multi-faith Centre | Health Centre | Careers advice | The 'i'

On both BA (Hons) and MA International Journalism, you will have a course tutor who will advise you if you have problems or queries with your work. In addition, you can ask for help or advice from international student advisors. You can use the new student information office The 'i' for confidential advice and guidance on student life and you can better your English with a language support course.

Advisory and Counselling Service

This service will not only provide you with an orientation programme to help you settle into life in the UK, but will also advise you on personal as well as academic problems, money and careers. The university has an excellent reputation for the support that it offers to students with disabilities or learning difficulties.

There are many practical ways in which we can assist. For instance we can supply books in Braille or on audio tape for students with poor eyesight. Some rooms in university residences have been altered to help students with physical disabilities and those who are deaf. If you have a disability or learning difficulty you are strongly advised to contact the university before you apply.

International student support

As an international student you may require a little extra support… that’s why we provide an international students advisor and central support team to offer information, advice, support and guidance on all matters concerning the welfare of international students.

This includes immigration, asylum, visa requirements for other countries, employment issues, practical issues, personal problems and social, religious or cultural matters. You can also get support in your faculty through the international co-ordinators.

Pre-sessional English language course

A four-week pre-sessional English Language course, free to all full-cost fee paying students, is available in August. The course covers language, cultural and study skills, as well as acclimatising you to the university, the UK and the British education system. You will also receive help with practical tasks such as registering with the police and opening a bank account.

Language support

Once your course starts you can register for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) support alongside your degree studies. Students receive two hours a week on an intermediate or advanced EFL course. Language tuition is free and can be taken as part of your degree or as an additional module. Twenty classes a week, during the day and the evening, at three levels of competence, ensure that the programme is accessible to everyone’s timetable.

Further information about the Department of Languages and International Studies and the facilities and services it offers to all international students can be obtained by telephoning 0044 1772 893665, or email: camgibson@uclan.ac.uk

Orientation programme

We welcome international students to a specially designed orientation week before the start of term. It will give you time and space to become acclimatised before the hustle and bustle of the new term begins. You will be introduced to the University and the city, receive help with domestic and administrative arrangements and be given information on language provision. It is also an opportunity to meet new friends from around the world with whom you will be sharing university life.

Multi-faith Centre

Whatever your religion you will receive a warm welcome at the Multi-faith Centre. The first of its kind in the UK, the centre offers to students of any faith or religious tradition the facility to pray or worship, to find advice and support, and to enjoy conversation and hospitality in a friendly atmosphere.

Health Centre

If you are on a full-time course of six months or longer you will be entitled to free medical care under the National Health Service. You should register with a doctor when you arrive, and most international students take advantage of the university’s recently built Health Centre. Located on campus, the modern centre has five doctors providing daily weekday surgeries and two nurses to give help and advice.

Careers advice

The Careers Advice Centre can help you assess your skills, learn about opportunities after graduation, make realistic career decisions and market yourself effectively. You will receive guidance from professional careers advisers. The centre provides information on occupations, further study, preparing CVs and interview techniques. Their reference library includes local, national and international directories.

The 'i'

The 'i' is UCLan's new student information office, the first point of contact for all student enquiries and support. The exciting new initiative aims to represent all student affairs services under one roof, reducing the need for students to be directed to various sites across the campus. There is also a new cyber café at the entrance, where students are able to use the new state of the art PCs to access information about the University and student life.
