Student reporters to tackle soccer scourge

By UKJournalism

Deepdale, home of Preston North End FC

Student journalists from all over Europe are invited to join footballers and officials in the growing campaign to kick racism out of the beautiful game.

All 92 English and Welsh clubs have united in the UK Football Leagueís Kick It Out campaign, Ron Atkinson has lost his job at ITV and the Scots media reports regularly on incidents of racism and other bigotry at football grounds.

Now the European Journalism Training Association (EJTA) is inviting student journalists to tell the story of football in the context of a multi-racial Europe.

Stories

Stories written and produced for print, radio, television and online will be brought together on a website hosted by the University of Central Lancashire.

Preston North End's Deepdale Stadium is home not only to England's oldest football club and the National Football Museum, but also to the club that signed England's first black professional player, Arthur Wharton, in 1886.

Student journalists who study in EJTA member schools should email their stories, preferably ready for the web, to Alan Rawlinson - agrawlinson@uclan.ac.uk. View the archive of students' stories.

Stories that are not in English should be accompanied by a letter from a tutor who has approved the content for publication.
