Journalism Society recruit Simon Kelner

By Lucy Beaumont

Simon Kelner, Editor-in-Chief of The Independent

The editor of the Independent is to be the Patron of our newly founded Journalism Society.

Editor-in-Chief Simon Kelner accepted the position after he was approached by members of the society which is being formed by students in the Department of Journalism.

Students considered various journalists for the role. They chose Mr Kelner because of his success as a national editor and his links to the university.

Former student

Mr Kelner, a former journalism student of the university, won Editor of the Year in December 2003, for the second time. The Independent won Newspaper of the Year in March this year.

Lucy Beaumont, chair of the Journalism SocietyLucy Beaumont, chair of the society, says she is delighted with his acceptance.

She said: "Simon is an extremely well regarded journalist. His links with the department made him an ideal choice.

"I think itís a great boost for the society. Weíre still in early days of development and support from the department and industry is just what we need to get going," she added.

There is an event planned in October for Simon Kelner to visit the university and officially launch the society.
