Sports expert signs-on to teach on new course
By UKJournalism
The Department of Journalism has recruited a well known face to teach our new Sports Journalism students.
Peter Stevenson has worked as a TV sports journalist for ITV, Granada, Channel 4 and Sky Sports.
Peter has reported on sport all around the world, including Manchester Unitedís Champions League exploits in Europe and their 1999 final in Barcelona. He later reported at the 2000 European football championships, and made a documentary for ITV on Brazilian football. He also covered the Rugby World Sevens series in Australia and New Zealand.
But he didnít start out in sport. Peter went from NCTJ trainee to chief reporter at the Clitheroe Advertiser after leaving school, before joining the Lancashire Evening Telegraph as their Ribble Valley reporter.
Long-term ambition
He realised a long-term ambition to join the BBC in 1984, going from reporter to producer, then news editor at BBC Radio Lancashire in Blackburn. Then four years later, the opportunity to work in television became too tempting, as Peter transferred to regional TV in Manchester.
As news reporter there, Peter covered Cumbria for a spell, then Manchester's failed Olympic bid which included interviewing Princess Anne at Buckingham Palace.
Sport soon beckoned
Sport soon beckoned and in 1992, Peter began reporting on Manchester United before branching out into other sports coverage.
Since going freelance in 2002, Peter has worked in sport on all the major TV stations. He also presents on Liverpool FC TV, who broadcast games to Asia, Scandinavia and Russia.
Peter is teaching journalism skills to first year students on our new BA (Hons) Sports Journalism.
