Magazine route for BA (Hons) Journalism

By UKJournalism

magazines

BA (Hons) Journalism students will soon have the chance to become magazine specialists.

The Department is planning to introduce a new optional route for third year students in magazine journalism.

Students already have the opportunity to specialise in either print, radio, television or online journalism in their final year. Some students choose to complete a dissertation instead.

Subject to validation, the new route is set to be introduced in September 2005.

Success

The move follows the success of the MA in Magazine Journalism which was launched by the department in September 2004.

Feedback from industry has indicated that with more than 6,000 publications produced each year, there are many opportunities for newly-qualified journalists to carve out a career in magazines.

Julie Freer, course leader of the BA (Hons) Journalism course said: "This will complete the full set of specialist options open to our undergraduates in the third year of their degree programme.

"Our MA in Magazine Journalism has already been very well-received by industry and it is the next logical step to offer undergraduates the opportunity to specialise in magazines."

Strength

Cathy Darby, course leader of the MA in Magazine Journalism added: "I welcome the introduction of the new third year route to the undergraduate course. It demonstrates the strength of interest in magazines and responds to the demand for high-quality training in periodical journalism."

BA (Hons) Journalism is a three-year full-time degree programme. Students are taught core journalism skills in their first two years and then specialise in an area of their choice in year three.
