Alison gives students a lesson in ethics
By UKJournalism
For journalism students who think ethics is a county in southern England, there was a rude awakening when Alison Hastings gave a talk on the Press Complaints Commission.
Around 100 postgraduates and undergraduates from the Department were given an hourís lecture by Alison, a former editor of the Newcastle Evening Chronicle and a newspaper representative on the Press Complaints Commission from 1999 to 2002.
She outlined the history of press regulation in this country and then went on a step-by-step guide of the editors' Code of Practice.

She also looked at individual cases, many of them involving celebrities.
The talk was part of a series by leading members of the newspaper industry and was of particular interest to students in their final year at UCLan who have modules and assessments in ethics and regulation.
"I do not normally get as big an audience as this," Alison told the students, "but Iím delighted that so many of you are interested in the workings of the commission."
