Pete launches his career at The Rocket

By UKJournalism

Pete Mabb

Third year student Pete Mabb is reading the news on the north of Englandís newest radio station three months before heís due to graduate.

He is coming to the end of his BA (Hons) Journalism degree, but started work at 106.7 The Rocket in Knowsley on April 18, just as the station was being relaunched.

"Itís great to begin my full-time career as a broadcast journalist here in Merseyside. The course at Preston has given me a real feel for the industry and how it operates," said Pete.

"The fact that weíve been working on professional equipment at the University makes me feel very at home. But most important is the fact that all our teaching is by people who still work as journalists or have spent many years in the business."

Determined

Andrew Edwards, Peteís radio lecturer, works in the department part-time and presents the breakfast show at BBC Radio Leeds: "Itís been obvious from the start that Pete loves radio and was determined to make his career behind the microphone."

Pete made his first broadcast at the age of 15 on hospital radio and has been doing shifts as a freelance journalist throughout his time at the Department.

He has already worked at BBC GMR, Wire FM in Warrington and Stockportís Imagine FM. He hopes to graduate on July 12, but will be back on shift the day after.
