Radio graduate wins Gold Sony Award

By UKJournalism

Mark Poyser with his radio Oscar

He only graduated from the Department in 2004, but Mark Poyser is celebrating after winning a Gold Sony Award - radioís version of an Oscar.

Mark - along with the rest of the news team at Viking FM and Magic 1161 in Hull - picked up the prize in the Information Award category for a series of programmes about binge drinking.

"Unhappy Hour" beat off competition from Radio Five Live Money and other BBC stations to win the first ever Gold Sony in Viking FM's 21 year history. The awards ceremony took place in London on May 9.

Mark who graduated in the summer of 2004 said: "I'm still completely shocked. No one expected to win anything, just being nominated was a massive achievement.

Absolutely delighted

"Who would have thought a year ago, when I was doing my radio documentary for my course, that Iíd be at the top awards ceremony in the industry? I'm absolutely delighted and won't forget the day for a very long time."

Mark studied BA (Hons) Journalism, specialising in radio in his final year. His tutor, Andrew Edwards, said: "Winning a Sony is a huge achievement, but to do so after only a year at work is even better!

"From the time Mark went on a successful work placement to Vikingís sister station, Radio Aire, as part of the course, I knew he had what it took to go far. This really proves it."

Andrew, who presents the breakfast show at BBC Radio Leeds as well as working part-time in the department, added: "What makes me even prouder is that Viking is where I started my own radio career, reading out football and horse racing results on Saturday afternoons."
