A British Council scholarship student says he chose UCLan over many other UK universities because of its reputation.

Polish MA International Journalism student Tomasz Dominiak, beat of hundreds of applicants to secure the British Council funded scholarship and had to go through a series of tough interviews and a six month wait to find out if he had been chosen.

He applied for the funding whilst working as a journalist on Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza and studying for a sociology degree at the same time.

He said: ģIt was a big relief when I found out I had been picked. It was hard work getting there because I was up against so many other people.ī

Tomasz had the privilege of choosing from a number of UK universities as to where he completed his MA and chose UCLan because of its excellent standing.

Excellent reputation

He said: ģI was told the University of Central Lancashire was one of the best places in the country to study journalism so I came here. Iķve found it a good place to study, the department is very impressive.ī

Tomasz has been writing for the Gazeta Wyborcza since he began an internship on its regional paper in 2003. He began writing for the national publication in 2004 and still freelances for the paper as well as a competition newspaper and a magazine. Recently he managed to pin down ex BBC Director General Greg Dyke for an interview.

He said: ģIt took me awhile to get hold of Greg Dyke but I persisted and eventually he agreed to be interviewed by me ń it was a great opportunity.ī

Tomasz applied to do a Masters in International Journalism because he feels it will give him an edge over other journalists when he returns to work in Poland.

He added: ģJournalism training is more professional and practical in the UK than in Poland so I will benefit from that. I am hoping this will boost my career and provide me with fresh prospects for when I return to Poland.ī
