Evening Post front page scoop for student

By UK Journalism

Amanda Smith with her front page story in the Lancashire Evening Post

A final year print student has landed a front page splash in the Lancashire Evening Post.

Amanda Smith initially wrote the story about proposed speed bumps and restrictions around Preston for her course newspaper Preston Independent and then later passed it onto the LEP. She said she was shocked when she found it out was on the front page of the newspaper.

ìI was really surprised and wasnít expecting this at all. I regularly write for the paperís student page but to get the front page scoop is greatî she said.

Amanda found the idea for the story when she was handed a leaflet in town that suggested the positive impact the proposed speed bumps would have. She decided to get the other side of the story and discovered quite a strong reaction.

She said: ìI interviewed a range of people from the council press office to funeral directors to people on the street. Most people werenít happy about it at all!î

Career plans

Amanda hopes the front page story will spice up her portfolio and help with her job applications. She has completed a work placement at the Lancashire Evening Post and has recently applied for a job there too.

Amanda added: ìI would love to work at the LEP. I really enjoyed the time I spent there on work experience and it would be a great opportunity for me to kick off my career there.î
