Student offered BBC Radio 4 internship

By UK Journalism

Joe Robinson

A final year print student has landed a prestigious Sports Journalism internship at BBC Radio 4.

Joe Robinson was applying for newspaper jobs when he received an e-mail about the BBC internship. The mad-keen sports fan applied immediately and went to a talk about the post given by Radio 4 producer, Kevin Mousley.

Joe and the other hopefuls were set the task of compiling a running order for a sports-talk radio programme. His entry was chosen and he was offered the placement.

ìIím delighted, a bit lost for words actually.î Joe said.

ìWhen I entered, I thought I had a chance because Iíve got a very wide knowledge of sport. I haven't worked in radio but Iím looking forward to making a contribution. I know I'll learn a lot too. It should be fun.î

Opportunity

The 10 week internship runs over the summer and Joe hopes that the placement will lead to more opportunities in sports journalism and eventually hopes to go into sports editing or features.

Senior lecturer in journalism, Delwyn Swingewood, said: ìItís fantastic. Joe is a very talented all-round journalist with a great future ahead of him.î

Joe isnít the only third year print student to land a job before graduating. Ruth Moulden is joining the Slough Observer. Ruth so impressed the Berkshire newspaper during her work placement that she was offered a traineeship.

Jennifer Minard joins the Press Association as a trainee production journalist later this month. ìPA seems to be something of a second home for our print students. Five of last yearís cohort are working there,î said Swingewood.
