For the third time in four years a UCLan journalism student has beaten off stiff competition to become a trainee on the Daily Mail trainee sub-editors course.

The traineeship is run by the Press Association and all three of the successful students have been from the MA and Postgraduate Diploma in Newspaper Journalism.

Phil Gradwell, who is 22, begins his new position on July 31 and faces an arduous summer as he finishes his Masters with a project on Racism in Football that is due in September.

Dream job

Phil said: ìIíve always wanted to work as a sub-editor so this is a great opportunity for me. I think it will be intense and hard work but will be a great start to my career.î

Phil was up against over 1000 other applicants to secure a place on the course and he came top in the written examination he sat whilst at his interview with the Press Association. He said he is looking forward to the travelling involved in his traineeship.

ìIíll spend time working in Ireland and Scotland as part of the course which is exciting and means I wonít get stale in the job eitherî he added.

Phil, from Bolton, follows Joel Cooper and Greg Tindall, who became Mail/PA trainees in 2003 and 2004. He will have similar training to three other former UCLan journalism students who are currently on a sub-editing training scheme with The Sun newspaper.
