Graduate gets dream magazine job

A graduate has been offered her dream job at one of Britainís top national magazines.

Jacqui Meddings will start work at Sugar magazine as a Features Assistant less than a week after she has graduated with a 2.1 BA Hons Journalism degree.

She says she was delighted when she found out the news.

ìThey rang me up half an hour after the second interview to say I had the job. I was jumping up and down and wanted to tell the whole of London about it.î

Jacqui, who chose the magazine route in her final year, decided to apply for the job soon after she finished her course.

She said: ìIt became my focus and I read most girls' magazineís to death to prepare myself for the interview. I was so relieved when I was offered the job and all my hard work had paid off.î

Prepared

Jacqui went through a rigorous selection process for the job and attended two interviews as well as having to suggest new feature and gossip ideas for Sugar. She said though the application procedure was tough she felt well prepared.

ìA lot of what I was asked to do came naturally to me because of the practical side of my course and because of all the freelance work I have done.î

Jacqui has written for local Preston magazine Your Quarter as well as for Manchester Online and website Female First. She is no stranger to celebrities having recently interview Jessica Taylor from Liberty-X and band Journey South.

She added: ìTaking my portfolio to the interview worked because I could show off my experience and writing skills.î

Her work for the magazine will cover a broad range from keeping the office running and helping to create a team atmosphere to researching and writing features articles.

ìThe ethos of Sugar is about having fun but with a degree of responsibility too because we deal with teenage issues such as safe sex campaignsî she said.

The course leader for the BA Hons Journalism course Julie Freer said it was a fantastic opportunity for Jacqui.

"She has been a really hard-working student throughout her three years as a journalism student - it is richly deserved. I'm sure she has a great future in journalism ahead of her.î

Jacqui added: ìI remember stealing my older sisterís copy of sugar when I was 13-years-old and to now be working there is a dream come true.î
