Get your work printed in the Lancashire Evening Post

The Lancashire Evening Post offers journalism students the chance to keep ahead of the rat pack by getting their stories in print.

The Students Today page is a showcase for your writing talent and provides the opportunity to build up cuttings for your portfolio.

ìIt doesnít matter whether youíre a postgraduate or undergraduate, doing print, TV, radio, or online,î says senior lecturer in journalism Delwyn Swingewood. ìThe important thing is to get your name seen and improve your job prospects.î

The Tuesday page, now in its third year, focuses on the university, campus life, clubs, societies, the Students Union and every issue affecting students, from top up fees to the price of a pint. The stories also go online.

Most promising journalist

By-lines arenít the only prize. At the close of the academic year the LEP presents UCLanís most promising journalist with £300 and a trophy. ìThe past two awards have been picked up by women print journalists, Amanda Smith and Stephanie Cartwright, so itís about time some of the chaps woke up. The broadcasters need to get in there as well,î says Swingewood.

The Alan Burgess award is judged from a portfolio of work. This comprises five stories, one of which has appeared in the LEP, either on the student page or elsewhere in the paper. The remainder could be from student newspaper Pluto, coursework or stories from work placements.

Stories, vox pops, people pieces, reviews and pictures are needed. Digital cameras are available from Technical Services on the first floor of Greenbank GR177.

ìIt goes without saying that students must observe the ground rules of fair and accurate reporting. They must get their interviewees permission for publication,î says Swingewood. ìAbove all they shouldnít take any risks when doing a story.î

Copy deadlines are 1100hrs every Thursday for publication the following Tuesday. First page is scheduled for Tuesday 31 October. First deadline Thursday 26 October.
