Journalism Leader Director to speak at World Editors Forum

The Journalism Leaders Programme Director, Francois Nel, has been invited to speak at the 14th World Editors Forum in Cape Town.

Francois, who was the first academic to become a member of the World Editors Forum, will speak at the Forumís eighth session entitled ìBalancing ethics, transparency and independence in the newsroom.î

He will talk about the Journalism Leaders Programmeís projects, including working with Johnston Press in advising and supporting the newsgroup's development into a multi-media newsroom.

In an interview with the Editors Weblog that is published by the World Editors Forum, Francois said: ìThe rules are no longer just about how we do our jobs, theyíre about what our job is. We are used to saying that we are in the communication business but that business suggests a flow of information that goes two ways.

ìWe should be looking at what we do as a conversation. We shouldnít be entranced by our own voice. Basic communication means you listen as much as you speak.î

Trust and transparency

In his speech Francois will also discuss how trust and transparency are coming together in the relationship between the consumer and news provider. He will look at ìhow transparency is not merely a state of being, but an approach that journalists and other professionals take in opening up to the public, letting them know how they come to the conclusions that they do.î

The theme of the three day event is ìQuality Journalism in the Digital Ageî which will be discussed over nine sessions. Last yearís World Editors Forum in Moscow welcomed a record number of 350 editors.
