BBC Radio Five Live commentator Alan Green visits students

By Joel Andrews

Alan Green with sports journalism students

Third year Sports Journalists enjoyed a no-holds-barred visit from BBC Radio Five Live’s premier commentator Alan Green.

Alan was his usual entertaining and forthright self as he gave a fascinating insight into his work and how he had got to where he was.

This included a surprising admission that whilst at University in Belfast he had had no interest whatsoever in becoming a broadcast sports journalist. In fact he had studied History, and even as he progressed in to the field of Journalism it was news and current affairs that were his main interest.

Own style

The visit from Alan also gave the students an opportunity to ask questions about his experiences and like his character there was no holding back with the responses. He also gave some great advice for any would be sports broadcaster, and underlined how important it is to be yourself and have your own style.

The visit was a real treat for everyone, with Alan passing on some of his vast professional knowledge and also amusing the class with some colourful stories and anecdotes.
