UCLan's eighth Journalism Leaders Forum will consider the impact of digital technologies on sports journalism.

Entitled “Spoiled Sports: Will the digital media finish off sports reporting as a credible form of journalism?” The session kicks off on the 29th of January at 5.15pm at the University’s main campus in Preston.

It will also be webcast live online from 6.30pm, enabling online participants to interact via text chat

The forum will be chaired by Charlie Lambert, a veteran BBC North West sports presenter and commentator, who now runs the highly-regarded sports journalism programme at UCLan.

International perspective

An international perspective will come from Kadambari Murali, first woman named Sports Editor of the influential Hindustan Times in India, who will give a unique insight into how different cultures, markets and gender consume sports journalism.

Andrew Moger, consultant who heads the Newspaper Publishers Association’s digital rights campaignAlso joining Charlie on the panel is Mihir Bose, multiple award-winning journalist, author and BBC Sports Editor, Phil Townsend, Director of Communications for Manchester United Football Club, Andrew Moger, consultant who heads the Newspaper Publishers Association’s digital rights campaign, and Robert Hardie, Content Strategy Director for Associated Northcliffe Digital, a leading UK digital publisher.

François Nel, Director of the Journalism Leaders Programme commented: “With events like these, UCLan aims to reach out to a potentially global audience and provide the opportunity to engage with some of the leading practitioners in this field.

"This forum is set to cause a lively debate around the influence of digital technologies on sports reporting, and we are sure it will be a great success.”

This is the latest in a series of forums that UCLan has devised to stimulate debate on issues that affect those in the industry and the wider public.

Combining face-to-face panel discussions with online interaction with initiatives such as webcasts and in-class debate, the forums go a long way towards giving future media leaders a grip on the issues in a world of escalating change.

Particularly notable in this forum is the contribution from India, which reflects the University’s commitment to international partnerships, particularly in emerging markets.
