Department’s Marathon men

Dean Scoggins and Mark Hudson train for the London Marathon

Former print students Dean Scoggins and Mark Hudson are running in this month’s Flora London Marathon.

Dean, 24, said: “We were at Tower Bridge watching last year’s marathon and a guy with two false limbs ran past. We wondered what were doing just watching so signed up for this year.”

Mark, 24, said: “I was overweight, drank too much and smoked but it’s amazing what you can do when you drag your backside out of bed. I’m actually enjoying the training and can’t wait for the day.”

It’s all a far cry from their day job as subs on The Sun newspaper. Since serious training began in February the duo have each completed two half marathons, two 18-mile runs, two 20-milers and a 22-mile slog. And they’ve given up booze.

Journalism lecturer Delwyn Swingewood said: “It must be serious if they’ve given up drinking. I’m sure they’ll fall off the wagon spectacularly after the race.”

Dean, whose mum has completed six marathons, is raising money for The Alzheimer's Society in memory of his grandad who fought a long battle with the illness.

Mark who is running for Children with Leukaemia is threatening to do the course in fancy dress.

If you are feeling generous you can sponsor our marathon men; even if it’s just the cost of a pint. For Dean’s charity go to www.justgiving.com/deanscoggins And Mark’s can be found at www.bmycharity.com/hudsonsbleedingnipples.
