A Fleet Street veteran is teaming with third year print journalists for their final project and returning to his reporting roots.

Award winning reporter David Graham is writing opinion pieces for the print students’ assessed newspaper The Preston Journal. His first two were on a far-right party standing in the local elections and a pub closing.

“They were designed to give the newspaper a firm and determined stance on the two topics close to my heart: beer and politics,” said David who is head of the Blackpool News Agency.

Journalist of the year

David started his career at the Blackpool Gazette before and went on to become chief reporter at the Daily Star. Along the way he was also won journalist of the year and crime reporter of the year.

“I’m always pleased to help out students in whatever way I can having been a student at the same place 30 years ago when it was the Harris College.”

Ricki DewsburyDavid was recruited by Journal editor Ricki Dewsbury. “It’s fantastic to have someone with so much experience writing for us. Everyone in the group is really pleased and it’s lifting the quality of our paper.”

Course tutor Delwyn Swingewood said: “Recruiting a star columnist shows great use of contacts. It’s wonderful to have veterans like David working willing to give up their time to work so closely with our students.”
