New lecturer will bring international perspective to teaching

By UK Journalism

UCLan International Journalism lecturer Megan Knight

A journalism lecturer with a wealth of international experience is the latest addition to the department.

Megan Knight is the new course leader for BA (Hons) International Journalism and fresh from teaching in Dubai and South Africa she is keen to get started in Preston.

Megan said: “I think I’m working my way up north! I wanted to come to UCLan because it’s got a good reputation and there is lots of scope for new ideas.”

New Media Lab Director

Megan recently ran the media programme in Dubai for Middlesex University. She is the former Director of the New Media Lab at Rhodes University in South Africa that was set up in 1995 when new media first emerged.

“We realised at the time that new media would grow to be important and set up the lab to look into research and teaching of these issues” she said.

On the back of this an annual conference called Highway Africa has developed that attracts over 500 delegates to discuss “Internet governance, ICT policy and media for democracy.”

Megan’s cohort of students in Preston are themselves an international mix and she says she is looking forward to working with them.

“Journalism is a standard profession but I can bring an international perspective to the teaching. It will be great to enjoy this cultural mix and the students will see many different ways of looking at things.”

Megan’s background lies in print journalism and she has written for the Independent Group in South Africa. He research interests lie in alternative and new media and in particular how people use blogs as an alternative when commercial media can’t be trusted.
