A threefold research focus
The research policy of the division of journalism has three main concerns:
First, to build on the success of its inter-university book project on the challenges facing journalism in the twenty-first century by taking the key themes investigated within the book further via additional research and publications. Some of this work will complement and overlap with that being undertaken by the new Professor of Digital Journalism.
Second, building on its considerable expertise, to further develop its industry related profile in digital journalism research and other areas. Its existing research profile in the field of digital journalism has been further enhanced by the arrival of Professor Jane Singer, who will be working with a personal research assistant. Professor Singer’s chair is funded by Johnston Press.
Third, to continue developing its well established work focusing on relations between the news media and the governments and institutions of the EU.
In addition to these three core activities, the division is also building research links with the People's Republic of China.
These began early in the new millennium with the arrival of the department’s first visiting researcher from a Chinese newspaper. Her studies were funded by the Chinese government.
In addition to research opportunities at Masters and PhD level the division also offers a number of taught Masters programmes in journalism. At the moment students need to be able to fund their studies in full before applying for both the research and taught postgraduate programmes within the department.

Digital journalism
As well as close links with industry including the Johnston Press chair in Digital Journalism, the department has a strong online media team consisting of Mike Ward, Alan Rawlinson, Andy Dickinson and Paul Egglestone. Mike Ward is known internationally for his book Journalism Online (Oxford, Focal) 2002
The media and the EU
Division staff and research students are actively engaged in publishing in this field. The work originates from a book published by Peter Anderson and Tony Weymouth.

The division has a depth and breadth of journalistic experience that is renowned within the industry and now that expertise has made it in to print.
Staff Research Publications and Postgraduate Research
The division's postgraduate supervision personnel are coordinated by an academic with a long record of successful PhD supervisions.
